Cognac is a regulated AOC since 1909. Its vineyard is subdivided in six regions stretching on 80 000 hectares (198 000 acres). Theses sub-regions are : Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne,
Fins Bois, Borderies, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires).
 
The soil of Cognac
The word champagne is actually derived from the Latin word campania qualifying a region whose terroir was not good for cultivating cereals or breeding cattle, but happened to be ideal for the vineyard.
 
The grape varietal of Cognac

The dominating grape variety in the cognac region is Ugni Blanc also called Trebbiano in Italy.
